THE 3-3-3 + POWER OUTFIT FORMULA (WHY I NEVER CHECK A BAG)

Everyone talks about the 3-3-3 packing method.

3 tops.

3 bottoms.

3 shoes.

It works.

But it’s incomplete.

Overpacking isn’t giving you more options.

It’s giving you more confusion.

That’s why you stand there staring at a full suitcase… with nothing to wear.

I don’t pack more.

I pack using a formula. (I am a hair colorist.. I use formulas all day)

The 3-3-3 Formula

Start here:

  • 3 tops

  • 3 bottoms

  • 3 shoes

Everything mixes. Nothing is random.

That gives you 9 base outfits.

And for most people, that’s where the wheels fall off…

Because this is when they start adding more.

and more

The Upgrade: The Power Outfit

I don’t add more clothes.

I add one intentional outfit:

  • Little black dress

  • Cardigan

  • Blazer

Worn together as my travel outfit.

Not extra. Not optional.

This is the piece that changes everything.

Why This Works

That one outfit breaks into layers:

  • The dress stands on its own

  • The cardigan elevates casual looks

  • The blazer sharpens everything

Now those pieces don’t just sit in your bag.

They move across your entire suitcase.

They make everything else better.

The Styling Multiplier

I also bring:

  • 2 scarves

Not for warmth. (well, not always)

For variation.

Because repeating outfits isn’t the problem.

Looking repetitive is.

What This Formula Actually Creates

Start with your base:

  • 3 tops × 3 bottoms = 9 outfits

Now layer:

  • Add blazer or cardigan → 27 looks

Now style:

  • Add scarves → 81 variations

Now shoes:

  • 3 options → 243 combinations

Then add the dress, the blazer, and the cardigan working together and separately…

And suddenly you’re not short on outfits.

You’re choosing between them.

The Real Difference

Most people pack more.

I pack better.

Because a formula forces you to:

  • choose pieces that actually work together

  • stop throwing in “just in case” items

  • build outfits before you ever zip your bag

What This Fixes

You stop:

  • overpacking

  • dragging heavy luggage

  • checking bags you don’t need

You start:

  • getting dressed in minutes

  • repeating pieces without looking repetitive

  • moving through your trip lighter

The Bottom Line

You don’t need a bigger suitcase.

You need a better formula.

And once you start packing this way…

you won’t go back.
